‘Active shooter’ reported near US highway, numerous people shot

Police were searching for a 32-year-old suspect after a shooting Saturday along a rural stretch of interstate highway in the U.S. state of Kentucky.
Just before 6 p.m. local time, shots were fired at motorists from an overpass or wooded area along the highway 14 kilometers from the town of London, Kentucky, officials said.
At least seven people were injured, London Mayor Randall Weddle said in a Facebook video.
Not all of the injuries were from gunshots, Weddle said. Some, he said were due to an accident.
“No one was killed from this, thankfully, but we ask that you continue to pray,” he said.
Authorities shut down part of the highway, evacuated the wounded and began searching for Joseph A. Couch, described by the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office as an “armed and dangerous” person of interest.
The highway was later reopened.
Weddle said searchers were operating in “rugged terrain and a lot of tree lines.”
In the meantime, he advised residents to be cautious.
“We are asking everybody in the city limits to be vigilant and know what your surroundings. If you’re home, keep your doors locked. I’m not asking anybody to panic,” Weddle said.
London, with a population of about 8,000, is located 120 kilometers south of Lexington.
The shooting took place two days after four people were killed in a shooting at a Winder, Georgia, high school. A 14-year-old student and his father have been charged in that case.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI were assisting state police and local law enforcement in the Kentucky investigation, authorities said.
Some information for this report came from The Associated Press and Reuters.
